The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occurred December 7, 1941. The United States’ declaration of war followed on December 8, the same day this young couple from the middle of the country married. Rose and Howard had traveled from Southern Iowa to the neighboring state of Missouri, where marriage was legal at age 17. She was 17, he 20. He alone would go ahead to California to join the now-determined war effort. Getting jobs seemed easy – not only was there a call to arms, but a call to war work.

Though the work did not seem in question, housing might prove otherwise. However, with one of his brothers already established in Mission Beach, San Diego, there was an address for arrival. Then, just one day after getting on the road, December 11, the United States declared war against Germany.
